Match of the day

Q. Our venue is supplying table stationery as part of the package. However, I've already decided to have our invitations made by a stationer and I'm now worried that they won't match with the stationery provided by the venue. What should I do?

A. Emma-Louise Saunders says: This is of course entirely up to you and completely dependent on your budget. I suggest that you ask your venue to show examples of the stationery they provide. Having been in the business for over five years, I know that most venues' stationery is very basic and corporate, but it will do the job.

If you have sought out a professional stationer to provide your invitations and the budget will allow for the entire wedding stationery package, then I would absolutely recommend ordering it. At weddings I've been to this year, stationery was always a talking point and guests do appreciate and complement these special touches. Table stationery also makes a great keepsake for your guests.

Stationery sense

Q. I can't afford to order all of the stationery necessary for our wedding. Which stationery should I concentrate on to create the most impact?

A. Emma-Louise Saunders says: The most popular item is the order of service book, but if you want to create a wow factor for your tables, I recommend ordering table numbers/names. These are not expensive, and they are the first things your guests will see when they approach the table. It really is disappointing to see a beautiful table with stunning flowers and a table number printed on a piece of paper. Secondly, I'd suggest place cards. They add colour and can be personalised. And if your budget allows, menus and table plans can also be ordered.

Invites Translated

Q. I need some of my invitations in a different language. Is this possible?

A. Emma-Louise Saunders says: Yes, your stationer should be able to provide you with invitations in different languages. They are likely to request the full translation from you and will send the proof for your approval. A small fee may be applied to create a template in another language.

Save the Date

Q. My wedding is in August. How soon should I order my invitations and when should I send them out?

A. Emma-Louise Saunders says: Sometimes when I advise couples how early they should approach a stationer (in some cases as early as 12 months before the wedding) they are quite surprised by the timescale. But it is different for every couple and every company works differently.

If your wedding is taking place during the summer months, then you will need to take into account that some of your guests may start planning their holidays in January/February and that could possibly coincide with your wedding.

If you do not want to send out your invitations as early as January, it's worth sending a "Save the Date" card, which can be sent anytime between September and December. You could even include them with your Christmas cards to save on postage! This will allow you to send your invitations out as late as April. The most popular months couples request to have their invitations are between January and March - so these months can become booked up in advance.
