Oil control

Q. I have oily skin that gets shinier as the day goes on. Is there anything I can do to control this?

A. Katrina Shortland says: Many of us tend to look at oily skin as a problem, but the sebum produced by the sebaceous glands acts as a skin lubricant and also protects it against bacteria. There is no magical cure for oily skin, so it's essential that you follow the right skincare plan to control this.
A simple routine for very oily skin would consist of cleansing, toning and moisturising the face twice daily. This involves removing dead skin cells with a facial scrub that will make the skin look fresh and bright, as well as helping to control blemishes and breakouts.
Applying a facial mask once a week will also help control excess oil; a good brand is Dermalogica. Try the Special Cleansing Gel, Multi-Active toner, Daily Microfoliant and Active Moist moisturiser.
With oily skin, try to wear as little make-up as possible. If you apply too much, it will appear blotchy and patchy as the day wears on. Because the viscous oil changes the appearance of your foundation and powder, use a foundation that's one shade lighter than your skin tone. A MAC blotting film is an excellent way to remove excess oil.

Make it last

Q. No matter how many layers of lipstick I apply, it doesn't seem to stay on for more than an hour. How can I give my lipstick staying power for my wedding day?

A. Katrina Shortland says: Long-wear lip colours promise to last as long as 12 hours, but I have yet to find one that does the trick - they tend to dry up the lips and look unnatural. To make your lipstick last longer, choose one that's the same shade or one shade darker than your lip colour. Apply this to
the outer line of your mouth, but don't overdraw the lip line.
Then use the liner to fi ll in the entire lip. Using a brush, apply the colour following the natural line of your mouth. Blot with a tissue to remove excess product.
